“CRONENBERG-ESQUE” SHORT FILM MIXES CONTEMPORARY PHILOSOPHY WITH GOOEY SPECIAL EFFECTS

Award-winning science fiction short film FLESH COMPUTER, written and directed by Ethan Shaftel, will premiere online on October 17th on popular film website Vimeo.com, and will be featured on ShortOfTheWeek.com, FilmShortage.com and others on October 21st.

FLESH COMPUTER is set in a derelict future city, where a weary handyman cares for a cybernetic “pet project” made of live flesh and mechanical parts.  But when a pair of thuggish bullies threaten the contraption, the line between human and machine becomes blurred.

Woven into the narrative is an extended interview with well known philosopher and cognitive scientist David Chalmers, discussing our contemporary understanding of consciousness in counterpoint to the action. Chalmers gave a well-received TED talk this spring.

The film stars Rob Kerkovich, now a series regular on NCIS: New Orleans and with popular appearances on Chasing Life, Masters of Sex, House of Lies, Modern Family, CSI: Miami, and others

Other notable participants in FLESH COMPUTER include special effects artist George Troester who continues to compete on the SyFy Channel’s special effects competition show FACE OFF and has become a fan favorite.

FLESH COMPUTER has appeared in 20+ film festivals in the United States, Europe, and South America this year and won BEST SPECIAL EFFECTS, BEST SCREENPLAY, and BEST SOUND DESIGN at multiple festivals.
